Occupational safety
Luzenac considers safety and health programs to be an investment in its most valuable resource: its employees, and continuously strives for ever higher standards in safety performance at all its sites.
Our commitment to employee safety dates back several decades, but the focus on safety was greatly increased in the 1990s. Management programs have been set up based on the Dupont de Nemours and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) international safety rating system and prevention tools, essentially behavior-based, have been implemented, appropriate to each local operation's size and culture. The safety management systems are assessed regularly by an inter-company auditing program to reinforce commitment, leadership and performance from each operation.
Although we are proud of the overall progress we have made in safety, experience has taught us never to be satisfied. In 1998, a disaster in one of our Austrian mines killed ten people. This tragedy is an indelible reminder to all of us that safety is about people.
Luzenac will continue to pursue continuous improvement in all areas of safety performance to achieve the ultimate goal of an injury-free workplace.
