Occupational health

Employee health is a top priority for Luzenac and it uses best available health and safety practices appropriate to its operations. Dust and noise constitute the two main exposures in talc mining and processing. Every effort is made to maintain noise and dust levels well below regulatory levels.

Monitoring

  • Workers are equipped on a regular basis with individual samplers that monitor continuously the noise and dust levels to which they are exposed.
  • Screening programs (including lung X-rays, respiratory functional testing and audiograms) are carried out on a regular basis.
  • Internal and inter-company health audits are conducted at all Luzenac operations.
  • Luzenac organizes on-going health promotion programs for its employees (anti-smoking, nutrition, safe driving.).
  • Internal communications systems are used to inform employees and promote HSE policy.

Epidemiological studies

In addition to controlling sources of exposure and monitoring levels to check they are well within accepted limits, we arrange for independent ethical research to be carried out on the respiratory health of our people. This takes the form of epidemiological studies to compare their respiratory condition with that of the general population. This work is performed independently and the results are published fully in peer-reviewed literature. The World Health Organisation has commended Luzenac on this practice of independent study and open publication in scientific literature, which, they point out, is all too rare in industry.
