Luzenac talcs for Paints and Coatings

Luzenac talcs confer a wide range of benefits to paints. For instance, in house paints, they are used as titanium dioxide extenders, reduce cracking and sagging, and enhance matting. In anti-corrosion primers, Luzenac talcs improve corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. Luzenac offers paint formulators a unique portfolio of talcs and talc-related minerals covering the industry's many applications. The choice of talc product depends on the specific functionality required. For more information, or to discuss the appropriate talc product for your requirement, please contact our paints and coatings team.

Dry hiding and TiO2 extender

  • Luzenac talc platelets are naturally lamellar with a high specific surface area. This allows more air to be incorporated into the film as it dries, giving an effect of « dry hiding » above the CPVC.
  • Luzenac talc platelets also improve TiO2 utilisation through better spacing, enabling formulators to save on primary pigment usage.

Anti-cracking

  • The interaction of the talc lamellae with the paint components creates a strong resistance to the tensions that build up in the drying film as it shrinks.
  • Luzenac's lamellar talcs significantly reduce cracking, thereby improving coating appearance and durability.

Matting

  • In decorative, matt paints at high PVC, certain Luzenac grades can impart a deep matt finish.
  • Other grades give a semi-gloss or matt finish to varnishes and low PVC paints.

Rheology

  • The physiochemical interactions between the talc particles, resins and other paint components increase low-shear viscosity. This improves application rheology, and reduces sagging and in-can settling.

VOC reduction

  • Luzenac's low-viscosity grades are particularly suitable for formulating to low VOC.
  • The key parameter for formulating is the measured viscosity in the paint medium rather than the oil absorption.

Anti-corrosion

  • The orientation of Luzenac talc platelets and their surface properties protect the substrate by impairing water diffusion through the film.
  • Luzenac talc platelets also help promote adhesion to the substrate.
  • Our New High Aspect Ratio (HAR®) talc is ideal for enhancing the barrier properties of industrial coil coatings.
